How Ampersand keeps your documents and AI work private on your Mac.

This policy explains how Serenity Software handles information when you use Ampersand and the ampersand.md website. Your use of Ampersand is also governed by our Terms of Service.
Your work stays on your Mac
Ampersand opens the Markdown and UTF-8 text files you choose from your folders. Your documents, prompts, and AI responses are processed privately on your Mac and are never sent to a hosted AI provider.
Private AI, on your Mac
The writing assistant runs entirely on your Mac. On first launch, Ampersand downloads an approved model into a private on-device cache. Model downloads are checksum-verified before use. You can change the approved model from Ampersand’s settings.
Files you can understand
Markdown remains Markdown. Ampersand’s rich editor generates Markdown behind the canvas, and its source and split views let you inspect or edit it directly. Other supported UTF-8 files remain plain text.
A narrow context window—by design
Ampersand gives the assistant the active conversation and the files or context cards you attach. This lets you choose the material that belongs in a writing session instead of treating your whole workspace as one undifferentiated prompt.
Network access
Ampersand needs a network connection to download its AI model and check for application updates. Once the model is available, your writing and AI sessions happen privately on your Mac.
